A higher power, an undercurrent of energy, a universal force that guides all things. To some, it may sound supernatural and odd to believe in these spiritual ideas: guiding angels, divine paths, meaningful coincidences. Synchronicity, a term coined and brought to popularity by the father of analytical psychology Carl Jung, refers to these insane coincidences.

Jung first introduced the concept as a way “to describe circumstances that appear meaningfully related yet lack a causal connection.” Throughout his career, Jung used the term to argue for the existence of the paranormal, despite criticism from his field that synchronicity falls outside the bounds of science. Believing that synchronicity was critical to the human mind, and even healthy in the context of therapy, Jung continued publishing work about synchronicity until his death.

Spiritual synchronicities are intentional communications that are strategically sent to you by the universe to affirm, guide, and bring you to a higher alignment. People tend to attract these messages when they are at a high vibration, or in a moment of deep self-reflection and awareness. If you are questioning a big decision, career choice, or relationship, these messages may become more clear to you. If you are experiencing extreme self-doubt or extreme self-confidence, these reassurances may also appear to you more often. These divine clues are always there, but impossible to see without a heightened sense of awareness and attunement to all that is.

Serendipity refers to when something amazing happens by accident or chance. Some serendipitous moments might be finding a great parking spot, a $100 bill on the ground, or meeting someone inspiring right when you need it. Coincidence usually refers to a one-off lucky moment or a single experience of good fortune. These single moments are awesome, funny, and surprising, but don’t touch your soul in any way.

Synchronicity, on the other hand, suggests that multiple coincidences are really messages from a higher intelligence at work. Synchronicity is often a chain of events that are difficult to explain, that seem profound, and that feels incredibly meaningful. They feel like a reassuring hug by a universal power, guiding you towards the truths already known deep in your soul. People who are on the path towards enlightenment tend to experience synchronicity more often, as they are vibrating high and living in alignment. No matter where you are in your spiritual journey, as long as you’ve begun, you’ll know what I mean.
