Imagine it for a minute. The sunrise outside your window is streaked in pink and gold, the birds are chirping in the trees, and your first thought of the day is, “Wow. I’ve finally connected with my higher self.” If only the universe worked that way, but we all know that life is not one long happily-ever-after. It takes effort to bring your best self to light, and it’s a process that’s not going to happen overnight. But the good news is, you don’t need to look to the stars to connect with your higher self, because the answer is already present within of you.
To conceptualize it, think of your higher self as a ladder, and each step up is another level that takes you closer to the cosmic oneness that is the universe. The key is to find alignment between your mind, your body, and your soul, and each element needs equal attention and respect to elevate to the next level. When you find a sense of balance between your mind, body, and soul, otherwise known as the trifecta, you will be well on your way up that proverbial ladder. Thankfully the universe has provided a roadmap, you just need to know how to navigate it.
If you are going to connect with your higher self, you need to create space for that to happen. If you are moving through your days in a caffeine haze with a million things to do, you aren’t going to have the time or the inclination for anything else. That’s where a daily mindfulness practice comes in.
So be sure to take time every day for some quiet self-reflection. You can start your day with a morning journaling practice or by going for a walk. You don't need to spend all day outside in the woods, but getting out in nature will open your senses. You can even do some grounding to deepen your awareness of the earth beneath your feet. Whatever you choose to do, do it with consistency and purposeful intention.
We all have a higher purpose, a destiny if you will, but that can be such an abstract concept to grasp, and most people are still searching for their purpose. So do some soul searching of your own and find what lights you up, whatever that may be. Because when you take inspired action, the kind of productivity that instills in you a sense of harmony and flow, you come into alignment with your higher self. The truth is, we are all
made of energy, and when you can channel your own energy back into the world in a way that brings you joy, you are co-creating with the universe. You are doing exactly what you are meant to do, and what’s more, you inspire those around you to want to do the same.
If your soul is the light inside of you, then your body is the temple that protects that light. In order to connect with your higher self, it’s important that you listen to the needs of your own body. The idea is to be intentional about how you treat yourself because it’s a place where you need to feel peace, not stress. So be mindful of what you put into your body because it can either raise your spiritual vibration or lower it.
Remember that everything is energy - what you eat, what you feel, and what you surround yourself with. If you are constantly eating junk food, both your body and your soul with feel malnourished. When you listen to the cues from what your body is telling you, you start taking care of yourself on a spiritual level. After all, it’s difficult to connect with your higher self if you feel exhausted all the time. So balance rest with activity, and be conscious and aware of how your body is responding as you go through your day.
Ayoga practice is especially helpful because it keeps you focused and present in the moment. It makes you learn patience within the limitations of your own body and it’s a place where you can clear your mind, go with the flow, and surrender your ego. When
you take time to move your body through the various poses, it becomes an act of self-love that will go a long way in helping you open your mind and soul for greatness.
Nurture your mind
When you nurture your soul and your body, you engage your mind. Your mind is how you process your environment, but when it’s overactive, it can become a noisy, chaotic place. So it’s imperative that you find balance within your mind, especially since it’s tied to your ego. It’s essential when you are striving for enlightenment that you rise above your ego, otherwise your spiritual growth will be a slow and arduous process.
When you dwell too much in the past or the future, it keeps you from connecting with your higher self. That’s where meditation comes in. If you are new to the practice, don’t
be intimidated. It’s true that for some people, it’s easier to quiet the mind and be in the present moment. For others, that’s an extremely daunting task.
If you have a difficult time detaching yourself from your ego, you can light a candle and recite an affirmation as you gaze into the flame. Guided meditations are another alternative to silencing your mind, as they take you out of your body to a place of peaceful solitude. So follow your intuition and do what feels right for you.
The truth is, to be spiritual is to experience spirituality. When you do that you show the universe that you are ready to receive abundance and all the joy that comes with it. So be kind to yourself, and check in with your soul, your body, and your mind. Because after all, the only relationship that you keep forever is the one you have with yourself.
When it comes down to it, the two most powerful forces on earth are love and fear. The root of every major decision ever made stems from one of those deeply felt emotions. But when you understand the internal motivators that guide your actions, you gain a sense of discernment that will act as a compass as you navigate the complexities of life. So if you are trying to determine the difference between your higher self and your ego, all you need to do is ask yourself - am I coming from a place of love or fear?
The ego is often looked upon in a negative light in the spiritual world, but it’s a necessary element of being human. After all, the ego is the lens through which you perceive the world. But when you let your ego rule your thoughts or actions, you do so from a need for self-protection. Above everything else, your ego wants to avoid being vulnerable. Feeling isolated in shame keeps you stuck in the ego trap and you build walls around your pain from a place of defense.
Everyone has experienced feelings of failure at some point in the past, but your ego gives you the impression that you are alone in your suffering. So it’s easier to hide your true self from others by staying emotionally distant. But It’s that sense of unworthiness that results in self-limiting beliefs and negative self-talk. It's such a toxic cycle for so many people that it’s become an epidemic in society. But when your world becomes your fortress, are you really serving your higher self?
When you recognize that your behaviors are governed by your social conditioning and comparison culture mentality, you stop applying labels to yourself and engaging in self-incriminations. It takes time, but it’s necessary to do the inner work to break the cycle of the scarcity mindset. When you are willing to do the deep work that few people are brave enough to do, you open up to abundance as you forgive yourself for past mistakes.
Because the truth is, you can’t grow without failing, and since growth is scary, your ego is resistant to it. It’s when you start breaking down the walls that you have built around yourself and open up to vulnerability that you are finally able to walk through your fears. To do that, you have to trust in yourself. For most people, that‘s easier said than done.
But when you listen to that inner voice of intuition guiding you, you let the person that you already engage with evolve into the person that you are becoming. It takes some serious soul searching, but when you approach yourself from a place of love, you are able to let go of the past and embrace your own authenticity. It can happen in a moment of clarity, but it’s also a lifelong process. It takes having trust in the universe to surrender your ego, but when you do you discover that love replaces your fear. And that’s when you connect with your higher self.
