What Is An Empath?

An empath is a person who is able to sense the energies of people and places around them a lot more compared to other people. They have the ability to read between the lines and a strong gut feeling whenever there is something off about someone’s energy. Discerning energy is a good thing, but sometimes it can be emotionally draining when an empath absorbs energy that does not belong to them.

Signs Of An Empath

Here are some signs to know if you are an empath:

  • You feel overwhelmed when listening to someone in suffering.

  • You have a sharp and accurate intuition.

  • You feel fatigued after interactions with people.

  • You always feel the need to help or save others.

  • You struggle with boundaries.

  • You feel guilty about self-love and not caring too much.

  • You keep attracting people with problems.

  • You always feel the need to rest or go to nature to recharge your energies.

  • You have a sharp clairalience (sense of smell), clairaudience (sense of hearing), and clairsentience (sensations such as heaviness or lightness)

  • Your mood easily gets affected by people and places around you.

  • You cannot listen to any sad news, as there is always a sense of extreme overwhelm.

How Not To Absorb Energies If I Am An Empath?

Being an empath is not something you need to dread. In fact, it is a gift to be able to help and listen to others. You only have to find the right balance between self-care and caring for others. Here are some ways in which you can shield yourself from absorbing energies of others.

Stay Mindful Of The Energy Shifts

Empaths go through energy shifts, sometimes within moments. If a sudden energy change happens, you need to pause and reflect. Ask if this energy is your own. If the answer is no, then isolate yourself and ground all the energy. It will also help if you can label the feeling. Make a mental note of it and then do a remedy for the particular kind of feeling.

Practice Grounding

You can do grounding in different ways. The easiest method is to walk barefoot on grass, ground, or sand. The free electrons from the earth’s surface will neutralize free radicals within your body that can increase as a result of stress or any foreign energy.

If ground isn’t available, you can energetically ground yourself by imagining roots growing out of your feet and reaching the core of the earth. Yoga is also a great way to ground your energy.

Practice Visualization

You can create a protective energy field around your body through the power of thoughts only. Throughout the day, from time to time visualize yourself inside a protective bubble of energy. You don’t have to become paranoid of energies around you while doing this. It’s just about raising your vibration by thinking you are protected by a Divine energy at all times.

Practice Boundaries

It is easy for empaths to become a victim of frustration and negative emotions of the people they deal with. If we want to help someone, we don’t have to forget our own needs. If you feel drained of helping someone beyond your capacity, then you need to draw the line. Communicate your need for spending some time on your own in a polite way. Boundaries also mean limiting physical contact with people whose energy affects you in any way.

Practice Forgiveness

An empath interacts way more than most people do, which means frequent hurts happen. So when someone hurts you, it is more about them and not you. You just have to focus on forgiving that person and move on. It there is a need for setting a boundary, then do it to protect your vibration.

Find Ways To Release The Foreign Energy

At the end of the day, before bedtime, do rituals of releasing all the energies that do not belong to you. You can do this by meditation or taking deep breaths while visualizing letting go of all the foreign energy. Another way could be to maintain a journal where you can write affirmations or random thoughts so that the stress gets out of your system.

Repeat a Mantra

Choose a mantra that works best for you and every time you feel a wave of overwhelm, take deep breaths and repeat the mantra. Some examples of a mantra could be:

  • I lovingly return the energy to its source.

  • I am protected at all times.

  • My connection to the source is strong.

  • The Universe protects me at all times.

Cleanse with Water

Water has a tendency to soak in energy and take it away. While taking showers or bath, you can imagine the water soaking in all the stress and worries of the day and taking them away, down the drain. You can mix some Himalayan or Epsom salt in water, as it is a potent method to neutralize any negative energy.

Other ways could be taking a dip in lake water, putting your hands in a running stream, or standing under a waterfall that is safe.

Practice Energy Cord Cutting When Necessary

Sometimes you don’t realize, you are carrying an energy from ages ago. So, energy cord cutting meditation can help you get rid of that energy.

Recharge with Crystals

For each type of emotion that you experience, there is a crystal that neutralizes it. You can meditate holding those crystals. Always remember to recharge your crystals. Some replenish their healing properties through sunlight, some through water, and others through burying in Earth.

Another quick method is to keep a selenite wand. Whenever you feel any energy disturbing your energy field, just wave it around your whole body, and it will neutralize anything that you don’t need.

An Aura Shielding Meditation

Find a comfortable position, either sitting or lying down. Your posture should support the process you are about to go through. Keep your spine straight and tall, but not stiff. If it feels right, close your eyes.

Focus on the in-breath and the out-breath without the need to manipulate it in any way. You are just practicing staying in the present moment through the power of your inhales and exhales.

Keep focusing on the breath for the next three minutes.

And now bring depth to your inhales and exhales.

Inhale deeply right to the pit of your lungs, expanding your belly.

Hold it up a bit.

Exhale while letting all the air out in a steady flow.

Inhale deeply. Pause 1, 2, 3. And exhale completely.

Do these deep breaths three more times until you feel fully present in the here and now.

And now imagine you are sitting in a garden surrounded by greenery. This is a safe space where there is no one but you. Visualize yourself sitting under a source of white light coming from up above. This beam of light is pouring into the crown of your head, and filling into your shoulders, upper abdomen, lower abdomen, back, and legs, down to your feet.

The light has started to expand a little beyond your body, forming a protective shield. The first function of this shield is to protect you from any external energy that your aura does not need. Imagine any negative energies reaching you being reflected back to its source with compassion through the power of this energetic shield.

As a foreign energy tries to penetrate your auric field, the shield gets stronger in its brilliance and creates an even stronger protective bubble around you. This makes way for the outside energy to lovingly go back to its source. Your job is to give compassion to the outside energies, and allow them to return.

And now imagine this shield has increased in its radiance even more. Now the shield has started to glow with silver particles mixed with the Divine white light. These particles of light have started to dissolve away any negative energy that have already entered unknowingly. Visualize a release of energy taking place, where you can see gray strands of energy leaving your aura. Your body is glowing even more with the white light. All the places where the negative energy has left are now being replenished with fresh life force energy through the silver particles. Your energy field is being rejuvenated and energized.

You can sense this change taking place in each and every cell of your body.

While this energy cleansing is happening, repeat these words to yourself.

I am a Divine being of love and light.

I know how to protect the energy of my aura in all circumstances.

With each passing day, this protection gets stronger.

And with this, visualize the energy shield gradually fading away. Become aware of your physical body and notice any sensations that are present.

Bring your awareness back to your physical surroundings. Gently wiggle your fingers and toes. And if your eyes are closed, you may now open them.
